Phygital, connecting the digital with the physical

The world in which we live has already become a digital-physical hybrid in which distinguishing between the two is almost impossible. We experience it in our day-to-day consumption of information, interaction with companies, or even in our relationship with our close ones.

Rare is the current process that does not require a digital part (websites, applications…) and a physical part, always represented by ourselves, and sometimes by physical devices or smartphones.

The question is, how to connect these two worlds without causing gaps or fissures? This is where the Phygital concept is born.

What is Phygital?

The term phygital refers to the union between the physical and the digital, as its name suggests, consisting of the words “physical” and “digital”. The idea behind this concept is to unite both worlds in a smooth, safe, and simple way.

To this end, new technologies are geared towards the union between the two realities without leaving either of them behind along the way. Augmented reality or the metaverse are clear examples of the rise of this type of experience.

What is it for? Towards a phygital identity

One of the great challenges posed by this new scenario is the enigma of identity. We have all heard about digital identity, but in most cases, this is disconnected from our physical or real identity, i.e., the one that our identity documents prove.

The virtual world opens the door to countless new possibilities, but it also poses threats and risks. Online identity fraud is increasingly on the rise and it is essential for both end-users and organizations to have methods to detect and prevent it.

As stated by the United States Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency:

"Physical security & cybersecurity divisions are often still treated as separate entities. When security leaders operate in these siloes, they lack a holistic view of security threats targeting their enterprise. As a result, attacks are more likely to occur and can lead to impacts such as exposure of sensitive or proprietary information, economic damage, loss of life, and disruption of National Critical Functions”

What are the advantages?

The phygital identity allows us to have a single real identity and to exercise it freely and voluntarily in both the digital and physical worlds. Moreover, we can exercise it in a simple way, being ourselves, without passwords or credentials, thanks to biometrics.

Authorizing a payment with a selfie or accessing our office by showing only our face, without keys or cards, is already a reality in many places thanks to dasGate’s phygital identity platform.

How to set up a Phygital experience?

dasGate’s phygital identity platform enables the use of a single system to manage identity in both the physical and digital worlds. From verifying the real identity of users through a 1-minute onboarding process, to authenticating those same users for access to a football stadium, sports club or office.

Real-life phygital examples

The phygital experience is already a reality. Last May, more than half a thousand Osasuna members gained facial recognition access to the league match against Real Madrid at El Sadar Stadium. This makes dasGate’s biometric facial access the first to be used in the highest category of Spanish soccer.

It will be in this same stadium where the 22-23 season will kick off on Friday, August 12 and where, once again, all fans who wish to do so will be able to go to the stadium without ID cards, simply with their face, thanks to biometrics.
